Joseph Beuys: How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare

Joseph Beuys

How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare

26 November 1965
Galerie Schmela

In this performance piece, the artist could only be seen though the gallery’s window. His head and face were covered with honey and gold leaf. He then cradles a dead hare in his arms and proceeds to walk around the gallery with a slab of iron strapped to one foot and a felt pad to the other. As he is doing this he is whispering into the dead hare’s ears.
